Nazca Valley in Peru reveals new figure: 2,000-year-old cat discovered

The Nazca Valley in Peru is one of the tourist attractions in the South American country, because of the Nazca lines or so-called geoglyphs that can be admired there. Presumably two centuries ago, the indigenous people drew thousands of lines, hundreds of geometric shapes and dozens of animal figures in the sand. Best visible from the air, because many figures are tens of meters long.

Hummingbirds, condors, a monkey, a spider, a parrot, a dog and llamas can be admired. Now a cat is added, almost 40 meters long, against the side of a hill. The cat had not been noticed before, until a new road was built to a viewing platform on that hill, intended to be used to admire several Nazca lines.

The fact that the cat was only discovered now is because she is drawn on a fairly steep slope, so that she was in danger of disappearing due to erosion. The past week, the place was cleaned up so that the cat is still preserved. According to the head of the archaeological service of the Nazca Lines, the cat was drawn between 500 BC and 200 AD. So she would be older than many other figures. The reasoning behind this claim is that textiles from that period show images very similar to those of the cat.
