Covid-19 in Italy. “The situation is critical”

The Italian Prime Minister empowered the mayors of the Chambers to close public squares from 9 pm. An announced measure to prevent gatherings on the streets.

Giuseppe Conte said this Sunday that “the situation is critical”, this after it was announced that the country recorded a new maximum of cases in 24 hours – 11,705 – and 69 dead.

Conte reaffirmed that the Government is determined to avoid repeating the blockade in March this year. “The situation is critical. The government is there, but everyone must do their part,” he said.

Other measures were announced at the same time. Bookmakers will close at 9 pm, amateur sports competitions and local fairs have been canceled and the Executive is still considering closing gyms and swimming pools.

The Italian Government also intends to increase homework in the public administration and will ask secondary schools to create different schedules so that fewer students meet and reduce congestion in public transport.

The restaurants will be able to be open until midnight, but from 6 pm only seated customers can be served.

In some parts of the country, more drastic measures have already been applied, such as in Campania, where schools have been closed for two weeks.

Italy was the first European country to be heavily affected by Covid-19. With 36,543 fatalities, it is the second country in Europe with the most deaths due to this virus, only surpassed by Great Britain at this time.

At the beginning of the pandemic, in March, it was only possible to control the contagion with the application of a rigid national blockade of two months.

Facing a second wave, the Government tries to control the increase in cases without having to close the country again.
