According to the representatives of the musicians, the program dedicated to the legendary Janice Joplin was premiered this summer at the improvisation, jazz and world music festival “Riga Rhythms”. Now this program has been extended to the creative horizons of Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison, and in this version it will be premiered in Valmiera.
As the creators of the program emphasize, Janice Joplin, Jimmy Hendrix and Jim Morrison have made an indelible impression on 20th and 21st century music – both hand and jazz and contemporary music. Therefore, the new concert program is not only entertaining, but also educational. With its help, younger listeners will get to know legendary compositions, while older listeners will remember youth and the sexual revolution.
The group “Very Cool People” has created new, modern and exciting arrangements of songs by Joplin, Hendrix and Morrison for eight people together with singer Aija Andrejeva, who also has a strong emotional connection with the songs to be performed.
“Janice Joplin was a nugget, a man of absolute senses, wrong in everything he did, because he did it with his heart and against the system,” says Aija Andrejeva. “When I was a little girl, I told Dad I wanted to sing, and he replied to me, ‘When you can sing at least one song like Janice Joplin, we’ll talk about your singing.’ Her voice, her personality, and thanks to Janice, I realized how unimportant the exterior façade really is, because music and story speak for themselves, and I’ve always had the idea of making a program with Joplin’s favorite songs. really realize. “
The concert program with songs by Janice Joplin at the festival “Riga Rhythms 2020” was very well received by both listeners and representatives of the music industry from Latvia, Lithuania and Germany, including Christoph Giz, a viewer of Germany’s largest jazz magazine “Jazzthetik”, who was thrilled Interpretation of Joplin’s songs. “People liked it, it was entertaining, it was fun and I heard what I didn’t expect to hear,” Gize said. “It was a great performance with funky guys in the background and strong vocal singers in the foreground.”
“Aijiņa is my schoolgirl and in my youth I was an absolute fan of Janice Joplin,” said the conductor, singer and teacher Ivars Cinkuss, who attended the festival concert. “I know every one of her songs by heart, so I was very interested in how Aija would deal with this repertoire. It’s one thing to copy something, but the other thing is to get her breath in another’s mouth. I think Aija really did it.”
The new concert program “Woodstock’s Renaissance” was created as an excursion in such a historical period of popular music. Along with Aija Andrejeva, the owner of the strong voice, the group’s trombonist Laura Rozenberga, also sings in the concert program.
The group “Very Cool People” has extensive experience in arranging various compositions and producing concerts, so the new concert program is likely to be a wonderful musical experience for every listener. The main members of the group are: Oskars Ozoliņš – trumpet, Māris Jēkabsons – tenor saxophone, Laura Rozenberga – trombone, Kristaps Lubovs – baritone saxophone, Elvijs Grafcovs – guitar, Māris Vitkus – keyboards, Jānis Olamis – bass and bass
