People with Blood Type O Lower Risk of COVID-19

Liputan6.com, Jakarta Two studies published recently showed that people with blood type O have a lower risk of developing it COVID-19 compared to other blood groups.

In addition, people with blood type O may experience mild or less severe symptoms if they become infected COVID-19.

Launch Science Alert, one of the new studies found that patients COVID-19 with blood type O or B less in the intensive care unit (ICU) than their counterparts with type A or AB. They are also less likely to need a ventilator and less likely to develop kidney failure.

The two new studies appear Wednesday in the journal Blood Advances. One study looked at 95 critically ill COVID-19 patients at a hospital in Vancouver, Canada, US between February and April.

They found that patients with blood type O or B spent an average of 4.5 days less in the intensive care unit than those with blood type A or AB. Meanwhile, blood groups A and AB were in the ICU for 13.5 days. However, the investigators did not see any association between blood type and length of hospital stay.

However, researchers found that only 61 percent of patients with blood type O or B needed a ventilator. Meanwhile, 84 percent of patients with blood group A or AB need a ventilator more in this study.

Patients with blood type A or AB are also more likely to need dialysis or procedures that help the kidneys filter toxins from the blood.

“Patients in these two blood groups may have an increased risk of organ dysfunction or failure due to COVID-19 compared to people with blood type O or B,” the researchers concluded.
