A baby is the sole survivor of a plane crash that took place last Tuesday near Cundinamarca in Colombia’s Ubaté region. Little Martin (1) survived the blow because his mother protected him from the impact with her own body.

The plane, a Piper PA-28RT-201T Turbo Arrow IV, was piloted by the child’s father, the Colombian doctor Fabio Grandas Ramirez. In addition to his son, he also had his wife and the nanny on board. The plane ran into trouble en route from Santa Marta to Guaymaral and sent out a distress signal. What exactly went wrong is not yet clear. But the plane eventually crashed in the province of Ubaté, in the north of the country, according to various Colombian media.
The three adults were killed. Rescue workers found the child in his mother’s arms. He was taken to hospital in Bogota with head, chest and abdomen injuries. Local media report that his condition is “stable”.
The family’s death has hit Colombia hard. Known for his work as a transplant surgeon, Grandas volunteered with Civic Air Patrol for 12 years, serving as a flying doctor. In condolences, Grandas is described as “an angel who has taken wings today because his help has changed the lives of many people”.
