In the first five days of this week, 56% more cases of Covid-19 were registered than in the first five days of last week, Yuri Perevoschikov, director of the Infectious Diseases Risk Analysis and Prevention Department of the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC), told a press conference.
To date, 533 cases of Covid-19 have been detected this week, compared to 341 in the previous week.
The number of tests performed daily has increased by 26% this week. “If this increase in the number of tests were fully proportional, we could say that the number of cases has increased due to the increase in the number of tests,” the epidemiologist explained. In reality, however, there is still an increase in morbidity.
This is also evidenced by the proportion of positive tests, which was 2.3% last week, but has already reached 2.9% this week. “We are seeing rapid growth in the European Union as a whole,” said an SPKC expert.
According to him, the cumulative two-week incidence of Covid-19 in Latvia is actually 2.8 times lower than elsewhere in the European Union. At present, this indicator in Latvia has reached 61.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, while the European Union average is 172.9 cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
“The situation in our country is deteriorating, but not as fast as in the European Union as a whole,” Perevoshchikov summed up.
Looking at the morbidity rates in some municipalities, the epidemiologist pointed out that the counties reported on Monday are still on the list. As reported, on Monday, Perevoshchikov revealed that the municipalities with the highest rates of Covid-19 morbidity are Dundaga, Aizpute, Kraslava, Kuldiga, Roja, Daugavpils and Olaine districts.
In Kuldīga region, however, a decrease in morbidity has been observed for two weeks already, while in Daugavpils no increase is observed.
There is still a tendency for most cases of Covid-19 infection to occur in households, schools and, although less than before, in the workplace, the epidemiologist found.
It has already been reported that on Thursday the largest number of new cases of Covid-19 was registered in Latvia – 148 infected, according to the data compiled by the SPKC.
A person infected with Covid-19 in the age group of 30 to 35 also died last day.
4759 Covid-19 examinations were performed during the last day, which is one of the highest numbers of tests performed per day. Meanwhile, a total of 382,949 examinations have been performed in Latvia so far, 3204 persons have fallen ill and 1329 have recovered.
The proportion of positive cases against those tested last day was 3.1%. The SPCC has previously explained that this figure is considered important in the European Union, as above 3%, the spread of the disease is considered to be rapid and uncontrolled.
According to the National Health Service, a total of six Covid-19 patients were hospitalized last day. A total of 63 patients are treated in hospitals, of whom 54 have a moderate course of disease and nine have a severe course of the disease. At the same time, 12 patients were discharged from the hospital during the previous day, thus a total of 277 patients were discharged from the hospital, including both recovered and deceased.
