Latvian highway cyclist Emīls Liepiņš will make his debut on the big tours next week, starting the prestigious “Vuelta a Espana” cycling ride, the Latvian-represented “Trek-Segafredo” team has officially announced.
Of the eight athletes included in the team, in addition to Liepiņš, the Danish Aleksandrs Kamps, the Luxembourg cyclist Mihels Rīss and the Spanish Haun Pedro Lopess will also experience the debut tour. The experience of the big tours is the Danish Niklas Ega, the French Kenya Elison, the Italian Mateo Mosketti and the Dutch Koon de Kort.
The main goal of “Trek – Segafredo” in this Spanish tour is to fight for victories in certain stages. Despite the fact that the tour has been shortened to 18 stages, there will be quite a few challenges in the 47 categorized climbs and several mountain finishes. The sprinters will have the opportunity to compete for at least four stages, including the last with a finish in Madrid.
Team director Gregory Rast mentions Mosket as the main contender for the finish in the sprint, but the Italian is still recovering from his injury at the beginning of the season, so the second option will be Liepins. It was at the beginning of the season that the Dobel player made his debut for the Trek – Segafredo team and helped Mosket win two cycling races in Spain and finished in the top ten.
“Vuelta a Espana” will start on October 20 in the Basque Country and finish on November 8 in Madrid. The first six days of the race will overlap with this year’s Giro d’Italia.
Latvia is not represented in the Italian tour, but the “Tour de France” was started by Liepins team member Toms Skujins and Krists Neilands from the “Israel Start-Up Nation” unit. Both Latvians actively participated in the struggles, with Skujiņš winning the second place in one of the stages.
