An information campaign for more safety in road traffic took place in Wrzburg last week. In this form, the campaign is a premiere and goes back to a decision in the building and regulatory committee, informs the city’s security officer, Wolfgang Kleiner, in a press letter.
The aim of the campaign was for the municipal stewardship with the traffic watch and the police to sensitize road users to greater mutual understanding and more consideration in road traffic, in particular for a greater sense of responsibility towards weaker road users. Therefore, the protection of children, senior citizens, cyclists and people with disabilities was in the foreground, says Kleiner. From Monday to Friday, leaflets on certain traffic situations were distributed and published on social media.
Control and education reduced the number of violations
At the same time, key checks were carried out on site. One focus was the topic of securing the way to school. In addition to daily speed measurements in the 30 km / h range in front of schools, specific checks were carried out at the Josef Primary School in Grombhl, the Maria Ward School, the Goetheschool and the Mnchbergschule to determine whether parking was illegal on sidewalks. Fortunately, the presence of the parking controllers was used by the parents of the drop-off and pick-up traffic for informative discussions on the subject of a safe way to school. Not everyone was aware of the potential dangers that waiting or parked cars pose for children.
Warnings, education and awareness-raising showed success, according to the press release: While around 30 warnings for parking violations were registered at the beginning of the campaign week, the number fell significantly at the end of the campaign. A success through the presence and education, writes Kleiner.
Ten warnings in one day on disabled parking spaces
A lack of sensitivity on the part of road users also becomes apparent if they only parked briefly in a free disabled parking space without authorization. Such parking spaces are taboo for unauthorized persons, says Kleiner. The frivolous excuse that you drive away again does not apply. These parking offenders were warned and an explanatory text was left on the windshield. On Wednesday of last week alone, the focus day on this topic, ten such warnings were issued in the city center, each costing 35 euros.
Cyclists are encouraged to be more considerate in the pedestrian zone
Another focus of the campaign was cycling in the pedestrian zone. Cycling in the Wrzburg pedestrian zone is expressly permitted and encouraged, says Kleiner. However, cyclists are only allowed to drive at walking pace, i.e. no faster than seven to ten kilometers an hour. On Tuesday and Thursday of last week, almost 400 cyclists were stopped in the pedestrian zone.
Although the consideration and traffic discipline of some cyclists in the pedestrian zone are not at the desirable level, cyclists are urgently worthy of protection in other situations, according to the press release. The bike paths in Wrzburg should be safe for them. Vehicles parked on cycle paths not only hinder cyclists, they also endanger them. As part of the traffic campaign, cycle paths and protective strips were also checked. Fortunately, the number of park violations found was minimal, said Kleiner.
His conclusion: the week of action makes it clear that awareness-raising work is important and is also accepted. But some things can still get better, said Kleiner. Therefore we will be planning this action again for spring 2021.
