In the highest category – those with the “very high risk” – bars, pubs, sports and leisure venues such as betting offices and casinos have to close temporarily. However, schools and most other businesses should be able to remain open. The rules for those zones would be refined the following days in consultation with the local authorities. What is certain is that Merseyside, the area around the port city of Liverpool in the northwest of England, is described as “very high risk”.
Remarkable: Prime Minister Johnson’s measures only apply to England. In the other areas of the UK (Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland), the regional authorities decide on policy.
