The criticism of the ban on accommodation is getting louder. Numerous politicians are calling for the regulation that was only approved last week to be withdrawn.
Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller (SPD) and NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) announced that they will also be talking about this on Wednesday at the Prime Minister’s Conference. The Robert Koch Institute (RKI) reported 2467 new corona infections within one day on Monday morning, a week earlier there were 1382 new cases.
More and more cities are exceeding the warning value of 50 new infections per 100,000 inhabitants within seven days. According to RKI information from Monday morning, the value for Munich again exceeded the mark and is now 50.6. The Bavarian capital had already reached the warning level and tightened measures. Duisburg is now also just above the value, as can be seen from the RKI information, Düsseldorf just below it. At the weekend, among others, Cologne, Stuttgart, Essen and Mainz reported that the important warning level had been exceeded. Other large cities such as Berlin, Frankfurt and Bremen had already risen above this mark.
The focus of controversial discussions is currently the ban on accommodation for travelers from Corona risk areas. The President of the German Association of Cities, Leipzig’s Lord Mayor Burkhard Jung, called for a withdrawal. The regulation was “not well thought out, you will have to take it again,” said the SPD politician to the newspapers of the Funke media group (Monday).

Berlin’s Governing Mayor Michael Müller announced that the bans on accommodation will be discussed again at the Prime Minister’s Conference on Wednesday. Bans on accommodation, for example between Berlin and Brandenburg, make no sense in view of the hundreds of thousands of commuters, said the SPD politician on Sunday evening on the ZDF program “Berlin direkt”.
NRW Prime Minister Armin Laschet (CDU) said that his country had anchored a corresponding regulation, but not put it into force. Criticism also came from the opposition. “I feel that the general restriction on freedom of movement within Germany is disproportionate,” said FDP party and parliamentary group leader Christian Lindner of “Welt” (Monday).
The German Hotel and Restaurant Association (Dehoga) expects lawsuits against the accommodation ban this week. “I assume that legal proceedings will be brought here in the next few days,” said General Manager Ingrid Hartges on Sunday evening in the “Bild” conversation format “The right questions”. Chancellery Minister Helge Braun (CDU) defended the ban on accommodation in the ARD program “Report from Berlin” as a “real emergency measure”.
Economics Minister Peter Altmaier (CDU) spoke out in favor of more uniformity with regard to the Corona travel rules: “There must be a uniform and clear regulation so that every citizen knows what he is.” The 16 federal states are in the Responsibility to come to an agreement together, said Altmaier in the “Bild” conversation format “The right questions”.
Federal Family Minister Franziska Giffey warned against condemning young people across the board for the sharp rise in the number of corona cases. You shouldn’t play old against young, a lot of young people behaved prudently and sensibly, said the SPD politician, who is also youth and senior minister, on Monday in the ARD “Morgenmagazin” with a view to young people willing to party. “The line is not between old and young, but between sensible and unreasonable,” she added. If there are massive violations of corona restrictions, there must be consequences, regardless of how old the people are. At the same time, she called on people to refrain from major celebrations at the moment.
