Premiere of the poetry show “Song of Songs” in the Botanical Garden / Article / LSM.lv

This poetry electrifies, gives a heavenly feeling – says actress Maija Arvena about Solomon’s “High Song”. In her interplay with Andris Buli, she will also interpret this text in the new poetry show “Song of Songs”, the premiere of which will be shown on Thursday at the Palm House of the Botanical Garden.

The author and director of the performance idea is Nadine Bokovikova, in addition to the actors, the Armenian singer Asmika Bagojana and other musicians also participate in the performance. The show is expected to be atypically poetic nowadays, which will allow the viewer to get to another world as if for about an hour.

The show will have two compositions – in addition to the Latvian version, there will also be a Russian version.

A slightly surreal and untimely mood brings a show in which Solomon’s Hymn is sung among exotic plants in the Palm House. The task of the actors this time is not to speak poetry as naturally as possible, but on the contrary – to recite as poetically as possible, even with pathos – this was the intention of director Nadine Bokovikova. Asmika Bagoyana’s songs in Armenian, as well as the sound of flute and violin add a special atmosphere to everything.

Actress Maija Arvena acknowledges the real pleasure of speaking the lyrics of the High Song in the masterful refreshment of Knut Skujenieks.

“I’m so pleased that I was able to memorize this whole song because it’s like prayer – so beautiful! And if you still say it to another person, your loved one, how beautiful he is, how wonderful he is that you “You are so happy that there is such a person in your life. And in that beautiful poetry that is completely electrifying. It is a very special, heavenly and unique feeling for yourself,” says Maija Arvena.

Andris Bulis admits that the text is also so capacious and symbolic that in almost every attempt he discovers something new in it. One of the biggest challenges for him is the director’s attitude that this time he must deliberately advertise poetry very poetically, which is contrary to all modern views, but he also succeeds better with each attempt.

“The text is very poetic, very erotic, but its eroticism is not as it is today – very direct and specific, but very imaginative. I have a very long description of how I see a woman, and today it is already a big challenge to say so much compliment to a woman. “One evening I tried to read a series of compliments to my wife at home about what her nose is, and she looked at me for a long time to see if everything was okay with me,” says Bulis. “Since we live in a different time, but love, poetry, lust, sexuality have not disappeared, I hope, so I think Palm House could be interesting. Along with music, live performance, with Armenian songs that give such a mystical mood, also violin, flute. When the Armenian singer Asmika sings, ants run for me, and in the context of today, what is happening in Armenia and Azerbaijan … “

In such such an intimate show, the successful selection and interplay of actors is especially important, and the two have a similar opinion about it.

“I believe that he is the real Solomon, I even find it difficult to imagine another actor in Latvia who could be Solomon,” says Arvena.

“I’m interesting with Maija. I’m physically taller than Maija, and somehow I have such a salomonic feeling, if it can be said that he is so powerful and she is so small, and she also says – I am small, dark, “She says,” I was caught by the guards, and I look at him and I want to love him, and when I love him, she disappears in my arms, “continues Bulis.

In the high song, everyone can also find a reflection of their love, and it can be different.

Nadine Bokovikova, the author, director of the idea of the play and also the role of the actor in the role, perceives it as a symbol of the story of other relationships, but gives the actors a free choice to play their own version.

“It’s a human conversation with God in my view, but I haven’t told the actors this view of mine, I want them to play the way they see it. Yes, but for me, it’s not a woman’s and a man’s story, it’s more “Something similar we feel when we pray to God,” explains Nadine Bokovikova.

The premiere of the poetry show “Song of Songs” in the Palm House of the Botanical Garden will take place on Thursday, October 15, first the Latvian version and then also the Russian version, in which Nadine Bokovikova will play with Yevgeny Leonov.
