‘It’s in the nature of Americans to fear healthcare costs’

The health care system in the US varies by state, but follows these broad outlines everywhere: More than half of Americans are insured through work. The employer takes out group insurance. People over 65 and the poorest are insured by the national government. “Many people are not insured,” said Van der Horst. “That may be conscious, but people who do not have a job, are not covered by their job, or are not poor enough for government insurance are left out.”

The Affordable Care Act, popularly called Obamacare, was supposed to take care of these people. Under this system, it would be mandatory to take out insurance and insurers should not refuse people with chronic illnesses. The income threshold for government support was also lowered. The law reduced the number of uninsured people from 25 to 8 percent of the US population.

The Trump administration tried to get rid of Obamacare, but Congress stopped it. However, the law has been watered down: you will not be fined if you do not take out insurance and the states are not obliged to lower the income threshold for government insurance.
