Federal Minister of Energy Tinne Van der Straeten (Groen) has confirmed in a conversation with De Zondag that nuclear energy will be redundant by 2025 and that it will close the nuclear power stations.
Instead, she wants to focus on sustainable energy such as windmills, which she believes should become our national pride alongside chocolate and beer. “We are the number four worldwide for offshore wind turbines. We are really good at that. ”
Van der Straeten also argues for better electricity storage and better cooperation with our neighboring countries. The energy minister also stated in the interview that Belgium does need a few gas-fired power stations, but only for the transition phase.
Energy bill down
Her second major priority. Combating energy poverty. One in five Belgians cannot pay their energy bill. “My commitment is clear: the bill has to go down. Today it looks like a second tax bill. Did you know that most of it is taxes and charges? That is not logical. ” According to Van der Straeten, making our energy sources more sustainable does not automatically mean that the bill will also go up in the air.
