sport">Mighty Mike was eliminated in the quarterfinals on Saturday-evening by Simon Whitlock. The Australian won 3-0.
sport">Van Gerwen had won the World Grand Prix for the fifth time in his career last year. He previously succeeded in this in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. But again peaks in an ‘even’ year are not given to him in 2020. Just like in the second round of the World Matchplay in July of this year, he had to acknowledge his superior in Whitlock.
sport">Van Gerwen averaged 108 in the first set and eventually reached an average of 97, against Whitlock’s 100. The Australian was ruthless towards Van Gerwen. Whitlock punished everything the Dutchman left behind.
‘Let it be known’
sport">“I did not see this coming,” said Van Gerwen after his defeat opposite RTL7. “I didn’t throw very badly, but I have to hurt him a lot more at the start of the game. On the finish doubles I failed with two of the twelve. Simon’s opening doubles were always good, and every time after that he also put in a good score. Of course it is always sour when you lose, but I learn from this again. There is not one man overboard. ”
sport">Earlier in the evening, Dirk van Duijvenbode did ensure a piece of Dutch glory by eliminating Gary Anderson. Van Duijvenbode has to deal with Whitlock on Sunday evening to get into the final.
