North Korea appears to have held a military parade today to mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the Workers’ Party, according to information from South Korean military personnel.
“Evidence was detected that North Korea held a military parade at Kim Il-Sung Square [em Pyongyang] during the first hours [de sábado], mobilizing a large amount of equipment and people, ”said the South Korean staff in a statement.
The same statement, quoted by AFP, said that the South Korean and American secret services “are following the event closely”.
The parade takes place in a tense domestic context due to the covid-19 pandemic. North Korea, which has never confirmed the existence of a single case in its territory, closed its borders in January, in an attempt to prevent the spread of the virus.
Contrary to what has happened with parades previously held, this time no foreign media was invited. In addition, many embassies are closed due to restrictions imposed by the pandemic, which reduces the number of foreign observers.
The international community has imposed sanctions on North Korea following its nuclear missile program.
