The risk of death from COVID-19 triples with certain diseases, according to ToDay News Ufa.
The question was studied at the University of Pennsylvania College of Medicine. The results of the research are published in the journal PLOS ONE. The conclusions were drawn from a systematic review and meta-analysis published from December 2019 to early July 2020.
A total of 11 comorbid conditions were studied that pose a risk of serious illness and death among patients with COVID-19. These include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer, chronic kidney disease, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, asthma, chronic liver disease, and HIV / AIDS.
The average age of the patients whose data were studied was 61 years. It turned out that in patients with diabetes and cancer, the probability of death is one and a half times higher, in patients with cardiovascular diseases, hypertension and congestive heart failure – twice, and in patients with chronic kidney disease – three times higher.
