The Agency for Care and Health has started a major investigation in collaboration with the Flemish government. “The only plausible explanation is that an exotic malaria mosquito has been brought into our country via the airport of Zaventem or Melsbroek,” said a spokesman for the agency. The couple’s home is a few miles from the airports, and the spokesman said a mosquito could “fly that distance.” That reports the Nieuwsblad.
It would be virtually impossible that even more people in Kampenhout and surroundings have contracted the disease.
The type of malaria from which the couple died most closely resembles the variant that occurs in Africa. To find out which types of mosquitoes occur in the Kampenhout area, researchers will look for mosquitoes and mosquito larvae next week.
