tv Reason for a party at Canvas, because ‘Only Elvis will survive’ starts its tenth season tonight. Ten new guests are waiting in the wings, but the most notable is undoubtedly bestselling author and over all TV legend Stephen Fry (63). “It was not very difficult to convince him,” says presenter Thomas Vanderveken (39).
A little stunt. For example, you can safely call the hundredth guest in ‘Only Elvis will survive’. Because no matter how beautiful names like Tommy Wieringa, Tom Barman, Eva Van Braeckel, Michaël Borremans or Anna Teresa De Keersmaeker also adorn the poster of the new season, headliner is without a doubt Stephen Fry. The actor, author and presenter will be featured in the very last – the hundredth too – episode of the season.

“All in all, it was not very difficult to convince him,” says Thomas Vanderveken. “As is the case, we contacted his management. They warned us that Fry doesn’t do that many programs anymore. But we sent in a subtitled episode to convince him and not much later he agreed. It was our first party when we saw that he had downloaded the wetransfer file with the episode, but when we heard that he was going to do it, it was a bit unreal. A while later I traveled to London to meet him. ”

Fry is known all over the world, it doesn’t come for free you would think. “That’s true, but his ‘expense allowance’ was not exuberantly high,” says Vanderveken. “It is no more than the price we occasionally pay for image fragments that some guests choose. Buying the rights for images often costs a lot of money. ”
Jim Carrey
Vanderveken already received ninety guests in his studio. He will not soon forget some conversations. “I remember a fragment that Rudi Vranckx (60) took with him of IS members who set a pilot on fire. That was awful. Or how politician Assita Kanko (40) talked about her genital mutilation and the immense vulnerability I felt in her at the time. Really to be silent. ”
After all, which fragment Thomas himself would always include in his own episode? “Then I would go for a speech by actor Jim Carrey. One in which he tells how his father had the talent to become a great comedian, but ultimately chose a ‘safe’ job as an accountant. After twelve years he lost his safe job and they gave up again. So dare to jump, something I did for ‘Only Elvis’ at the time. ”
