LIVE | Prime Minister declares Madrid region corona emergency, ignores judge’s ruling | Inland

The Spanish government of Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has declared a state of emergency in the Madrid region to implement a corona measure. The regional government determined last week that people in ten municipalities had to stay in those places to prevent the spread of the corona virus. Traffic to those places was also generally stopped.

However, on Thursday, a court in Madrid ruled that those measures violate the fundamental rights of the estimated 4.5 million people affected by the restrictions.

The prime minister is now pushing that court decision aside. The police will check on Friday from 3 p.m. whether people adhere to the imposed restrictions. The state of emergency in the Madrid region went into effect immediately at noon.
