According to a new study by scientists from Columbia University (USA), the risk of heart attack and stroke increases dramatically after suffering the flu or flu-like respiratory illness.

Using the New York State public health system, the team looked at data from adults who went to the emergency room for stroke, heart attack and flu. In addition, the researchers used an algorithm developed by the Centers for Disease Prevention and Control to identify people with the flu using billing codes.

Research results published in the journal Journal of the American Heart Associationshowed that the number of heart attacks and strokes increased during periods of high incidence of influenza.

We found that if someone had a heart attack, it happened within seven days after a flu-like illness during the acute phase, and a stroke after 7-15 days. Said Dr. Amelia Boehme, lead author of the study.

Experts also found that in the years when the flu vaccination was highly effective, the number of people who had this acute respiratory illness, and subsequently a heart attack or stroke, was much smaller.
