The incident happened around 5:30 a.m. Friday morning. A truck loaded with relief supplies for Africa drove from the Antwerp Ring towards the A12 to Bergen op Zoom. At the traffic interchange, the truck was blown out at the front right.
The truck driver was able to get onto the hard shoulder at the exit in Ekeren in time, but at that moment his cab was already on fire. The fire then spread to the cargo, the truck was ablaze in no time.
The fire brigade arrived to extinguish the fire, but the fire continued to flare up in the cargo. The fire was not extinguished until around eight o’clock and the burnt-out truck could be hoisted. Because of the accident, there is a long traffic jam on the Antwerp Ring, it is queuing from before Deurne.
