Three-quarters of a billion for bones. The dinosaur may end up in a private collection

After the sale organized by Christie’s auction house, the 67 million-year-old fossil fell into the hands of an anonymous buyer. The actual winning bid climbed to $ 27.5 million, but after adding commission and other additional costs, the final price rose by more than $ 4 million.

At the same time, the dinosaur exceeded the original estimate several times. The auction house expected a final price tag of $ 6-8 million before the event. According to the British BBC, this limit was broken in a very short time during the online auction.

Stan’s historically highest price paid broke the record in 1997, when the skeleton of the most expensive T. rex known as “Sue” was sold. “Dinosaur” cost the buyer $ 8.4 million.

Popular Tent

The newly sold and most expensive specimen has so far been exhibited at the Field Museum in Chicago. However, where Stan is heading now is uncertain. As always, there is a fear that it could disappear in one of the private collections and be lost to the public forever.

T. rex, which was discovered in 1987.

Shortly after the sale closed, Christie’s auction house refused to disclose the name of the new owner. However, James Hyslop, head of the company’s sales department, said that more details about the future of the dinosaur could emerge in the next few days.

The popular dinosaur was named after its discoverer, amateur paleontologist Stan Sacrison. He found “Stan” in 1987 in the fossil-rich area of Hell Creek, South Dakota. The specimen is considered by experts to be one of the best preserved remains of a tyrannosaurus rex.

The finding includes 188 bones that underwent a series of tests and examinations. Damage to the skeleton suggests that the dinosaur was involved in a number of battles during its life, Christie’s wrote on its website.

“The tent quickly became a ‘standard’ for the shape of the tyrannosaurus rex. There are a huge number of castings of this extraordinary fossil that are sold all over the world, “said British dinosaur expert Phil Manning, who worked on the sample. “If you went to see T. rex in a museum, for example, it was probably a copy of Stan,” he added.

The sale comes with certain intellectual property rights, but the new owner has been denied permission to create future castings, 3D prints and is also prohibited from selling related goods online.
