A transsexual from the US state of New Jersey sued Amazon, accusing the company of discrimination after informing the supervisor of her pregnancy.
In the process, reported by several media outlets, it is said that Shaun Simmons, 40, was harassed, denied a promotion, and was forced to transport heavy objects during pregnancy.
An Amazon spokesman told People magazine that, although the e-commerce company did not want to comment on the specific case, “it does not tolerate discrimination or harassment of any kind”.
According to the media, in June 2019, Simmons told a superior about his pregnancy and, almost immediately, began to be congratulated by several colleagues. The reaction of colleagues, referred to in the file, suggests that the supervisor disclosed information that was confidential.
In the process, it is also alleged that some colleagues harassed him and, shortly thereafter, his performance at work began to be criticized by a superior.
Simmons later lodged a complaint with the human resources department and was given a paid leave.
Upon returning to work in August, and after unsuccessfully requesting a transfer to another service, Simmons was given different tasks than the ones he performed, namely he was required to transport dog food packages, among other heavy objects, ending up staying a week low due to abdominal pain.
He was later informed that the position he had been offered as a supervisor was no longer available and, after repeated requests for transfer of service, the company put him on unpaid leave until delivery.
Simmons claims he was discriminated against due to pregnancy and claims compensation of at least $ 75,000 (about € 64,000).
According to figures reported by the media, in 2019 at least seven women sued Amazon, claiming they were fired after they became pregnant.
