Operation personnel Zuyderland Hospital affected by corona virus

The Limburg Zuyderland hospital in Geleen and Heerlen is struggling with a corona outbreak among the personnel in the operating theaters. Most infections are at the location in Geleen.

Twenty employees of the operating theaters tested positive, including three surgeons. One of them has been admitted to the intensive care unit of his own hospital.

In total, the Zuyderland has about 180 to 190 employees involved in operations. “They were all tested by the GGD Zuid-Limburg after the first sickness report”, chairman David Jongen says against 1Limburg. “Of this group, 20 people turned out to be infected. They went home immediately.”

According to Jongen, there are no indications that the staff infected patients. Two of the hospital’s 19 operating theaters have been closed due to the infections. “To indicate the difference: in April we had 17 ORs closed and two ORs open”, says Jongen. According to him, all emergency care continues as usual.
