GPs are increasingly receiving letters from patients asking to be treated with the old malaria drug hydroxychloroquine, should they become infected with the corona virus. That letter was drawn up by the Limburg GP Rob Elens. This reports the NRC.

At the beginning of the corona crisis, many patients were given hydroxychloroquine. Since it was later found that patients were not benefiting from this drug, it was withdrawn from treatment. In addition, the drug can also have dangerous side effects. However, Rob Elens says he has cured ten patients with hydroxychloroquine. He calls on people to ask about this medicine. He adds that GPs are not obliged to adhere to current treatment guidelines.
The NHG is familiar with the GP’s campaign and emphasizes that it is of great importance to follow the guidelines. The Health and Youth Care Inspectorate states that a GP needs good motivation not to adhere to the guidelines. For the time being, the scientific basis for this drug is lacking and it is therefore not recommended to prescribe this drug.
