Barendrechts Dagblad | Mortality rate in the Netherlands is much higher

For the first time since the beginning of May, researchers see that a striking number of people die and that this may be caused by the outbreak of the new corona virus. An estimated 3000 people died last week. That is 200 more than expected. The week before, more people died than average.

“Because not all people with Covid-19 may be tested and the registration sometimes takes a little longer, the actual numbers of deceased Covid-19 patients in the Netherlands will probably be higher,” say the researchers of the CBS.

During the first wave of the coronavirus, more people than usual died for nine weeks. From the first full week of May, fewer people died than expected, apart from a two-week peak in the summer that researchers attributed to the heat wave. Now the increase in deaths caused by corona seems to be reflected in the mortality rate.

In particular, more people aged 80 or older died in the past week. During the first wave, a striking number of people who received long-term care, such as residents of nursing homes, died. The statisticians do not see that happening in the latest figures.
