The end of an era. Mitsubishi ends production of the first mass electric car

Narrow, yet relatively tall body, large glass with a strange-looking front grille. These were the main features of one of the first electric cars on the world market, the small Mitsubishi i-MiEV. It was introduced in 2009 and the Peugeot iOn and Citroën C-Zero and a number of other small Japanese electric utility vehicles have also been produced on its basis for a long time.

Originally, Mitsubishi wanted to sell the i-MiEV only to selected Japanese companies, but the car was a success, so it began to sell globally. He soon arrived in Europe, throughout Asia, and even overseas to the United States. It was one of the first electric cars, but it was not a blockbuster. According to the Nikkei server, Mitsubishi sold only 32,000 units of this very special car.

It must be said that this step was expected. In 2009, the i-MiEV was a relatively groundbreaking vehicle and was one of the first electric cars to travel at a speed of 130 km / h, but in recent years it has not been enough for development.

The same weak electric motor with an output of 47 kW remained under the hood and the range was a maximum of 180 kilometers. These are far from the numbers of today’s modern electric cars. The car gradually withdrew from Europe and remained only on the domestic market.

But Mitsubishi did not stop selling electric models. They are already planning another project with Nissan, and the i-MiEV line will serve as a place where the planned cooperative electric car will be produced.
