The United Nations, NATO, United States, Canada and Russia have called on the countries for a ceasefire. Today, the Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov called his Iranian colleague Zarif. The Kremlin has called on Armenia and Azerbaijan to negotiate an armistice.
But the Azerbaijani ambassador to Russia left on the Russian news agency Tass know that returning to the negotiating table is pointless because Armenia would violate international law.
Turkey and Russia
In the AFP interview, the Armenian Prime Minister states that Turkey is behind the war. “Although the Azeris have been speaking war language for 15 years, the decision to start the war was made with support from Turkey,” Pasjinian said. Both Armenia and Azerbaijan claim that the other started the conflict.
Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu has responded skeptically to the call for a ceasefire. During a visit to Azerbaijani President Aliyev in Baku, he said previous truces had failed because Armenia has not ended “the occupation of Azerbaijani territory”. Cavusoglu called on the international community to support Azerbaijan.
Pasjinian says he is convinced that Russia will support Armenia if his country is directly attacked. The Kremlin has good relations with both Yerevan and Baku.
