Two suspects arrested for posting racist graffiti

The police and the court have been able to identify and arrest two suspects who used racist slogans in Lanaken, Bilzen and Tongeren in mid-June. On Sunday, June 14, facades and bus shelters in the three municipalities were daubed. Some slogans contained language errors.

A man and a woman, both in their twenties, would be behind the scenes. Mayor Marino Keulen (Open Vld) van Lanaken filed a complaint against unknowns in June.

After the declaration, the public prosecutor of Limburg started an investigation. The perpetrators wrote slogans like ‘Hitler come back’, ‘Dirty brown’ and ‘Brown monkeys go back to your country’. Swastikas and references to Nazism were also added. Mayor Cologne called in the technical service to remove or paint the slogans.

Investigation, including review of camera images, led the investigators to a man from Lanaken and a woman from Tongeren. They have been arrested for questioning. They will receive a subpoena to answer in criminal court.
