Thiem ends up in a grueling quarter-final match of more than 5 hours at Roland Garros | NOW

Dominic Thiem was eliminated on Tuesday in the quarterfinals of Roland Garros. The third-placed Austrian lost in a grueling and very entertaining five-setter to Argentinian Diego Schwartzman.

After a match of more than five hours, there was 7-6 (1), 5-7, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (5) and 6-2 on the scoreboard in favor of 28-year-old Schwartzman, who is in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament for the first time.

The numbers three and fourteen of the ATP ranking made a spectacle of digging in Paris. In beautiful rallies they pushed each other to the limit. After the lost first set Thiem seemed to put things in order, but his Argentinian opponent did not give in and had the longest breath in the decisive fifth set.

For Thiem, the defeat means his worst result at Roland Garros since 2015, when he stranded in the second round. He has since reached the semi-finals twice and the final battle twice.

In the semi-finals, Schwartzman, who stranded three times in the quarter-finals of a Grand Slam, may face twelve-time Roland Garros winner Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard will play against Italian Jannik Sinner later on Tuesday.

Novak Djokovic-Pablo Carreño Busta and Alexander Rublev-Stéfanos Tsitsipás are the other two posters in the quarter-finals.
