The definitive sale to Barilla of the Pasta Zara plant in Muggia (Trieste), an agri-food company in Riese Pio X which has fallen into profound financial distress in recent years, has been completed.

The operation is worth 118 million euros and aims to «guarantee the ccontinuity of the business branch – Barilla announced – with the maintenance of employment levels and marks the start of an investment path by the Group with important positive repercussions on the territory ». The Trieste plant will thus become an integral part of the Group with «development and growth, through investments and the strong involvement of the people who now become part of Barilla».

The food giant’s proposal envisaged a “co-paking” contract, ie packing, wrapping and labeling of Zara products, for a period of five years. Pasta Zara will continue to operate independently in its headquarters in Riese and through its subsidiary Pasta Zara 3, in the Rovato (Brescia) hub.

The Muggia plant is one of the largest in the world in the pasta sector and can boast a self-supporting warehouse with 65 thousand pallet spaces, so far only used for a third. About 150 employees work in the plant, mainly in production functions, whose job preservation seems to have been ensured by the trade unions since the first informal preliminary contacts with the new owner.

Last fall therehe debt exposure had been quantified at around 240 million, 170 of which to banking institutions including the former Veneto councils, with the consequent transfer of credits to the Mef Business Management Company, such as to induce the property of the Bragagnolo family to ask the Court for a blank agreement.
