Belarusian opposition leader Svetlana Tihanovska will meet with German Chancellor Angela Merkel in Berlin on Tuesday. During the talks, Tikhanovsky wants to ask Merkel to mediate in the Belarusian opposition’s talks with Alexander Lukashenko. Merkel and the German government led by her have refused to recognize Lukashenko as the elected president of Belarus, calling for support for those fighting for freedom of expression.

As Svetlana Tihanovska said before the upcoming meeting, she will ask whether Chancellor Merkel could not mediate in talks between Alexander Lukashenko and the protest leaders. So far, Lukashenko has categorically refused to take part in such talks, which is why ways to increase the pressure will be discussed during the talks with Merkel. Only such pressure could force Belarusian officials to engage in discussions.

Addressing the German parliament last week, German Chancellor Angela Merkel expressed her admiration for the courage shown by Belarusian women in the front ranks of the protest movement. Commenting on the sanctions imposed by the European Union on Belarusian officials, Merkel emphasized that they are very important in strengthening those who want to achieve freedom of speech.

So far, Svetlana Tikhanovska has received support from a number of Western leaders, including last week from both French President Emanuel Makron and Polish Prime Minister Matthew Moravjecka.
