The fractures after the fall in Liège ended Van Avermaet’s season

Olympic champion Greg Van Avermaet suffered several fractures during the fall in the home classics of Liège-Bastogne-Liège and will no longer show up on the bike this season. The 35-year-old Belgian cyclist will treat broken ribs, the connection of the collarbone to the shoulder blade and a cracked protrusion on the thoracic vertebra.

Van Avermaet finished on the ground 97 km before the finish of Sunday’s cycling monument, which was won by Slovenian Primož Roglič. A Belgian specialist in one-day classics lay on the asphalt motionless for a long time, and after being taken to a hospital in Liege, an X-ray revealed a number of fractures.

“The images showed a fracture of the acromioclavicular joint, three ribs, a small pneumothorax and a rupture of the transverse process of the thoracic vertebra. He did not have a concussion,” said Max Testa, a doctor at Van Avermaet’s CCC team. The winner of the Olympic race in Rio de Janeiro or the classic Paris-Roubaix from 2017 will no longer appear in his colors, because from next season he will ride behind the AG2R La Mondiale stable.
