The 2020 Nobel Prize in Medicine was awarded to the British Harvey J. Alter and the Americans Michael Houghton and Charles M. Rice “for the discovery of the hepatitis C virus” starting in the late 1970s.
The trio of scientists was honored for “decisive contribution” to the fight against hepatitis, a “huge global health problem that causes cirrhosis and liver cancer,” the jury said in the announcement.
