One of the creators of the poison Novichok, a Russian scientist and chemist living in the United States, Will Mirzayanov, believes that Western countries can calculate how much of this substance was produced in the USSR, because Moscow had to buy one of its ingredients in Germany and Italy.
Mirzajanov revealed to the world in the early 1990s that a new poison “Novičok” was being worked on in the Soviet Union in the late 1980s. He was accused of disclosing a state secret, but after his arrest he managed to be released and emigrate to the United States, where he also published a book describing the formula of the substance.
Mirzajanovs revealed in the Latvian Radio program “Krustpunkts” that at one time the USSR bought one component from Germany or Italy to produce the poisons of the “Novičok” group, because it could not produce it themselves. The purchased acetamidine was sent to Turkey, and the secret agents transported the substance to the USSR.
The scientist said that the amount produced could be calculated by economic espionage, because in the western countries there were strict records of the produced substance, everything was legal, and it was necessary to study how much was produced and to whom it was sold.
Mirzoyanov explained that the substance was bought by the USSR because it did not have its own infrastructure to get to it.
Knowing the quantity purchased, it is possible to estimate the amount of poison produced, the scientist explained.
He admitted that while working in the team that researched Novičok, he gradually realized that a chemical weapon was being developed, “zeal subsided”, but in the performance of his duties in good faith, there were often conflicts with the leadership.
Mirzoyanov explained that he was not one of those who synthesized the substance, but that at least 1,000 people were involved in various studies after the substance was discovered, and he was one of those who took part in the research and testing.
“I’m not justified because I concluded at the end of my career that I was involved in criminal activity,” said the scientist.
He also expressed confidence that “Novičok” will not be able to produce amateurs or terrorists, it requires knowledge and education, as well as a very well-equipped laboratory. He said that other countries without experience and knowledge could hardly produce “Novičok”.
However, he does not believe that Russia could detect the presence of this substance in the body, so he doubts that in Russia, the leader of the Russian opposition Alexei Navalni did not detect the substance in Omsk, where after the poisoning of “Novichok” arrived.
The scientist also said that the purpose of the poisoning of Navalny was to kill him, but there was a mistake in the dose. Mirzajanov said that in Soviet times, “Novičoks” was tested on animals, not humans, and the reactions and doses are different.
Member of the Scientific Council of the Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis, Academician Ivars Kalvins, commenting Recent statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin on “Latvia’s footprints” in the poisoning of Navalny in an interview in an interview with Rus.lsm.lv told to synthesize poisonous battle the substance “Novichok”, which poisoned the Russian opposition politician Alexei Navalny, is a chemically simple task. However, it requires a special laboratory, but there was no such laboratory in Latvia during the Soviet Union and does not exist now.
