Cuties has come under fire more often in recent weeks. The movie of Maïmouna Doucouré was mainly criticized for a poster showing the young girls of the film, scantily dressed in evocative poses. Now, however, Doucouré also receives support from other famous cinéastes.
For example, directors such as Debra Granik (Leave No Trace), Mary Harron (American Psycho) and many others have expressed their support for Doucouré in an open letter. Due to the misleading poster (which Doucouré had nothing to do with anyway), the film is accused of sexually exploiting young girls, while just condemning such practices.
Brief
”As filmmakers and writers who sometimes themselves come under fire for our approach to sexuality and gender, we support Mignonnes and his beautiful, sensitive portrayal of sexual growth in young girlsthe letter begins.
”We are particularly moved by the insight you have gained through your experiences as a French Muslim woman with Senegalese roots. Only you could have made this film and we welcome your voice in current and future projects”.
The letter is here to see.
