Greg van Avermaet broke three ribs in a fall in Liège-Bastogne-Liège on Sunday. A fracture in his vertebra was also found. Most likely, the Olympic champion will no longer be in action this season.
The 35-year-old Belgian from CCC was the biggest victim of a crash in the peloton at about 100 kilometers from the finish. He crashed into a traffic bollard on a traffic island and had to stop fighting immediately.
X-rays in the hospital of Liège later in the day revealed the exact damage. “Fortunately, he does not have a concussion, but these injuries are most likely the end of his season,” CCC reports. “We’ll monitor his recovery and then make a decision in the next days or weeks.”
For Van Avermaet, the injury comes at a very unfortunate time. With the Tour of Flanders (11 October), Gent-Wevelgem (18 October) and Paris-Roubaix (25 October) there are races where he would normally have been one of the top favorites.
