Kariņš writes on the microblogging site Twitter that he has convened an emergency government meeting on Monday at 12.00 to hear an expert report on the current situation regarding the spread of Covid-19 and to decide on the necessary precautions to limit the spread of the virus.
As reported, The Ministry of Health (MoE) will encourage the government to make the use of face shields mandatory in public transport, the Minister of Health Ilze Ņķele told LETA on Saturday (“For Development / Par!”). Such a requirement was already in force at the beginning of the summer.
“According to experts, this would be the first Covid-19 restriction measure to be taken, so such a proposal will be submitted to the government for consideration. I call on the population to buy or sew protective masks for themselves already on holidays,” said Vickele.
The Minister explained that the implementation of restrictions is being assessed very carefully and the MoD will try to move forward with new restrictions in as slow steps as possible.
“Our goal is to maintain the full-time learning process in schools for as long as possible, so we will not rush with new restrictions,” Nikķele explained.
She emphasized that the number of unexplained infections made it necessary to be cautious, but that there were no grounds for introducing any new restrictions on assembly or working hours at the national level.
“For the time being, such restrictions have been introduced in the local Covid-19 outbreaks. We hope that, as long as possible, such restrictions will not be necessary nationwide,” adds Vinkele.
In Latvia, the 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population, according to the European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), has exceeded 23 cases for the first time.
So far, the highest cumulative rate of Covid-19 incidence per 100,000 population in Latvia in the last two weeks was observed on April 6, when it was 20.52 cases.
ECDC data on Saturday show that the 14-day cumulative number of Covid-19 cases per 100,000 population in Latvia is 23.3. Previously, the highest level in Latvia was reached on April 6, when it was 20.5.
During the last 14 days, 504 new infections have been detected in Latvia, according to the Latvian Center for Disease Prevention and Control.
