CDA MP Van Dam states that almost all places of worship in the Netherlands behave sensibly ‘by being very reluctant to deal with celebrations and services’. “It is a pity that this denomination does not set that example. Even with the necessary restrictions, justice can be done in these difficult times to the fundamental right of religious freedom. ”
The Christian Democrat also regrets that ‘the exception sets the picture’. “The right to freedom of religion does not relieve you of the obligation to deal with it appropriately and safely. Very bad example of this. ”
‘Incomprehensible’, D66 foreman Jetten calls the decision to keep the services. “Many churches, mosques and synagogues are taking their responsibility in the corona crisis. Not this church. Incomprehensible. Let Minister Grapperhaus – responsible for church services – conduct a penetrating conversation in Staphorst as soon as possible. ”
PvdA leader Asscher finds the actions of the church ‘really irresponsible’. “While other Dutch people are asked not to stand on the line at their children’s football match.” He believes that no exception to the corona rules should be made for religious gatherings at all. “If cinemas, theaters, sports clubs and catering establishments are asked to contribute to the fight against the virus, religious communities must also make their contribution.”
CU also critical: ‘Not a good example’
Group leader Segers of the ChristenUnie believes that the church “does not set a good example, as other churches do.” He notes that many churches are acting responsibly in the corona crisis. “Fortunately, they are not hotspots of infection.” A spokesman for the House of Representatives adds: “As far as we are concerned, churches could be an example of how to deal responsibly with the corona virus.”
The CU spokesperson states that freedom of religion also requires responsibility. “That means: not looking for the maximum limits of what is allowed, but starting from what is sensible. Churches do that too. But the way in which the Hersteld Reformed Church in Staphorst deals with this freedom is an exception and not an example in our opinion. ”
In Staphorst
Local politicians in Staphorst are also concerned about the three large divine services that are held in the church on Sunday. “Meetings of faith with 600 persons cannot be constitutionally prohibited. But churches do have a responsibility and should not push the boundaries of what is allowed, ”the local CDA faction wrote in a statement. “Churches serve as an example and have responsibility to the entire community.”
The Communal Interests faction in the village calls the church services “unwise and irresponsible.” “It is called upon not to wear a face mask during the service, while the government has explicitly asked to use a face mask in public buildings.”
According to a spokesperson for the church, during the services nothing that is prohibited happens and the church building is very well ventilated. There is also singing. In Staphorst itself not everyone happy with the major church services, our reporter noted.
