Van Wymersch also points out that there is an urgent need for a fully-fledged justice site in Halle-Vilvoorde, where the public prosecutor’s office, the house of justice and its own court are all together. No trace of the latter can be found in the new coalition agreement, but a nearby justice house is desperately needed, according to the Procurator.
Flemish Minister of Justice Zuhal Demir (N-VA) has promised a fully-fledged justice house, but to date there is still no political agreement on where this should be. “It must be housed on the same site where the public prosecutor’s office and the court are located,” says Van Wymersch.
“For example, victims can view their file with the assistance of a judicial assistant and attend their trial instead of having to go to Brussels every time. Offenders can be followed up in their own region and work on addiction problems here. The mediation discussions between perpetrator and victim can therefore continue in a justice center that is adequately secured. ”
