At the moment there are just over 150 corona patients in intensive care units in the Netherlands. That is still manageable, confirms chairman of the Dutch Association for Intensive Care (NVIC) Diederik Gommers. There are 741 corona patients in the regular ward. “In the first reports, we see that possibly fewer patients from the regular ward to intensive care. That would be great news. ”
Gommers says in WNL On Saturday on NPO Radio 1 that the second wave is “really different”. “What we are seeing now is that the number of admissions of covid patients to intensive care is increasing very slowly,” he explains. And unlike during the first wave, regular care is not immediately discontinued. “Eighty percent of that concern then stopped. That gave us a lot of space for the covid patients, and in the end it went just fine. ”
‘It is busy’
The reduced flow to the ICs is what, according to Gommers, will be the difference compared to the first wave. “Fortunately, we see fewer covid patients, because we have now started giving certain drugs.”
Now there are also between 650 and 700 patients on the ICs without Covid-19, says Gommers. “That means that we can handle it well at the moment. But it is busy, because we do not want to scale down regular care. “
