Jens Petter Hauge’s new employer Milan secured a place in the Europa League group stage in a very dramatic way.
The Danish midfielder Simon Kjær put in the decisive penalty kick that gave a 9-8 victory after the actual match ended 2-2. It was Kjær’s second goal in the penalty shootout.
The first 14 penalty kicks went in goal, but then the players began to miss. Seven of the last ten penalties were missed. The decision was made when Gianluigi Donnarumma saved the shot from Aderilan Santos, who had scored on his first attempt.
The two goalkeepers Donnarumma and Pawel Kieszek also took penalties, and both missed.
Alexis Saelemaekers gave the visitors the lead early in the second half in Portugal, but Chico Geraldes equalized for the home team and forced extra innings. Rio ave took the lead immediately at Gelson and kept it until overtime in the 2nd extra inning.
Then home player Toni Borevkovic made a penalty kick and was sent off, and Hakan alhanoglu equalized to 2-2 on the penalty kick.
Then followed a penalty shootout that included as many as 24 shots. In the end, Milan could cheer.
