The city parliament rejects a petition submitted at the end of last year as inadmissible. Nevertheless, a number of the initiative’s demands are to be implemented.
Around 40 activists from the “Climate Decision Darmstadt” initiative campaigned for the goals of their referendum submitted last year in front of the congress center on Thursday afternoon before the start of the city council meeting. The climate protection activists stood in front of the entrance to the Darmstadtium and held up posters on which the eleven demands of the citizens’ initiative could be read. A poster also read: “Expressions of intent are not enough” and “Special investment program now!”.
With the votes of the Greens, the CDU and the Uffbasse, Uwiga and AfD parliamentary groups, the city parliament rejected the initiative’s petition by a large majority as inadmissible.
In a detailed report, the city’s legal office criticized the “serious deficiencies” in the cost recovery proposal. The initiative had estimated that 37.2 million euros would be required to make Darmstadt climate-neutral by 2030. Regardless of the legal assessment of the request, the city wants to realize more than two thirds of the demands. Appropriate templates are to be created for this in the coming months and years. However, neither Lord Mayor Jochen Partsch nor Environment Secretary Barbara Akdeniz (both Greens) could give a concrete budget. The parliamentary groups of the Greens, CDU, Uffbasse and Linke voted for a corresponding municipal bill.
Mayor Partsch said that when it comes to climate protection, “the time for patience and procrastination is over”. It is thanks to the climate protection movement that the issue is now being tackled “faster and more consistently”. Partsch said that this year city companies would invest 152 million euros in climate protection projects. The SPD chairman Tim Huss criticized the fact that there are no cost estimates for planned climate protection projects.
The Uwiga city councilor Erich Bauer accused the green-black coalition of a clientele policy. For ideological reasons, they “kneel” in front of the climate protectors.
