A group of Dutch travelers has been stuck at Trapani Airport on the Italian island of Sicily since Thursday morning. On board their plane were three people who were tested positive for the corona virus upon arrival on the island.
The Italian authorities have decided that these people and another 36 fellow travelers who were near them are not allowed to leave the airport. Incidentally, they were tested negative for COVID-19.
According to travel agency Corendon, the authorities first wanted to take the group of travelers to a quarantine hotel, where they would all have to take a real corona test and wait there for the results.
“But the Italians have come back from this idea,” said a Corendon spokeswoman in response to reports about this in The Telegraph. Travelers are not allowed to leave the airport now.
Corendon reports that, together with the mayor and the Dutch embassy, an attempt is being made to return the travelers to the Netherlands. “Unfortunately, as Corendon, we have little influence on it. The Italian authorities are leading in this,” said the company.
The Dutch government cannot do anything
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports The Telegraph that the Dutch government cannot do anything about Italian policy. “The Italian travel advice is yellow. And that yellow advice means: yes, you can go on holiday, but there are risks. And this is such a risk: that you end up in a situation that you do not want to be in.”
According to the new corona rules on the Italian island, which took effect on Thursday, people must take a rapid test upon arrival.
