Velsen and Rijkswaterstaat held a competition in July for the name of the new lock. The municipality of Velsen will now compile a top 100 from all almost 5000 suggestions. Residents of the new lock can choose the five best from those hundred names. In the autumn, the municipal council of Velsen decides which name it will be. The new sea lock will open at the beginning of 2022 and replace the Noordersluis, which is at the end of its lifespan.

A lobby arose on social media to name the lock after sign language interpreter Irma Sluis. She has become very famous in a short time for her performance during the corona press conferences of Prime Minister Mark Rutte and other ministers. But in order to name a lock after someone, that person must have been dead for at least ten years, unless it is a member of the royal family.
