On Wednesday, the spokesman of the Czech Fishermen’s Association, Jan Skalský, informed about the death in the Farský reservoir (Farský rybník) on the web with a ban on fishing on the spot.

“There was probably a sinking of the bottom into the former underground shaft after coal mining. The level is dropped by a few centimeters, the water is cloudy to gray to white and can be smelled strongly of hydrogen sulfide, “said the spokesman.

According to him, people from the union are trying to save part of the fish and the rest will be disposed of in a rendering plant. The damage cannot be quantified yet, the dead fish are probably at the bottom of the tank, the removal will probably take several days. According to Skalský, catfish, carp and bream died, among others.

The reservoir was created by reclamation, the discharge is probably not possible, according to the spokesman. “It can be assumed that the bottom has fallen into the old shaft and toxic gases have just escaped from it,” Skalský told ČTK, adding that the Czech Environmental Inspectorate is taking samples. The results will indicate what substances escaped into the water.
