After more than twenty years, Ajax is putting an end to the cooperation with Ajax Cape Town. The Amsterdammers have reached an agreement on the sale of the 51 percent shareholding.
Ajax concludes that the ambitions and results in Amsterdam do not match the development of the football market in South Africa. Ajax Cape Town is no longer at the highest level and has not produced any talents in recent years that can strengthen Ajax.
“Moreover, Ajax does not see enough potential for the future here,” said a statement. “The club has shifted its focus to other markets.”
The relationship between Ajax and Ajax Cape Town was already damaged earlier this year when technical director Hans Vonk was fired for “serious allegations of misconduct”. Shortly afterwards, trainer Andries Ulderink decided to leave himself.
Since 1999 Ajax had a majority interest in Ajax Cape Town, a merger club of Seven Stars and Cape Town Spurs. Steven Pienaar and Thulani Serero managed to make the switch to Ajax. The Cameroonian Eyong Enoh and Lassina Traoré from Burkina Faso also succeeded, although they did not originate from their own youth academy.
The shares are sold to the current minority shareholder. The transaction will be completed on October 1.
