Heartburn, difficult digestion even after not particularly elaborate meals. Or swollen and sore belly, constipation, bloating: gastrointestinal upset that anyone has experienced at least once and that a study conducted on over 73,000 people from 33 countries around the world confirms as widespread problems. According to the survey, published on Gastroenterology, 40 percent of adults worldwide suffer from functional gastrointestinal disease that is, irritable colon, dyspepsia (the technical term for indigestion) and the like, for which there are no objective findings from the usual diagnostic tests and therefore there is no recognizable organic disease, although the symptoms are still annoying. The similar prevalence around the world, with small variations between countries: 49 percent of women and 37 percent of men meet the diagnostic criteria of at least one functional gastrointestinal disease, explains the study coordinator, Magnus Simrn of the Swedish University of Gothenburg.
