Warning strikes in local transport
The Verdi union started the industrial action in the public sector with a series of warning strikes this week. The municipalities point to empty coffers. Now warning strikes should also take place nationwide in local public transport. Many commuters are now wondering: does it also affect my city?
Here you will find an overview of the already known strike locations. This can be extended until Tuesday.
North Rhine-Westphalia
- Many transport companies have already canceled rail transport and large parts of the bus service. The local trains of Deutsche Bahn and the other railway companies are not affected by the strike.
- Düsseldorf: Working people and schoolchildren can expect significant problems on their way to work and class on Tuesday. The Verdi union has called for a full-day warning strike in public transport in North Rhine-Westphalia. Many transport companies have already canceled rail transport and large parts of the bus service. The local trains of Deutsche Bahn and the other railway companies are not affected by the strike.
- Cologne: The Kölner Verkehrs-Betriebe (KVB) announced that from Tuesday, 3 a.m., there will be no trams and that only subcontracted bus trips will be possible. “Significant capacity bottlenecks” and delays must be expected. Operations should start again on Wednesday morning at 3 a.m.
- Dortmund: The Dortmund transport company said the strike would “completely shut down” local transport in the city.
- Bochum: In Bochum, too, local transport is to be completely canceled, and there will be no trips by external companies, the transport company Bogestra said.
- Do not take part in the warning strike would be employees of the Rhein-Erft-Verkehrsgesellschaft, the railways of the city of Monheim and the Stadtwerke Gütersloh.
- Occasionally, employees of the private bus industry in North Rhine-Westphalia would also go out of work, announced Verdi.
In NRW it is about the working conditions of 30,000 employees.
Lower Saxony / Bremen:
On Tuesday (29.9.), Local public transport is to be paralyzed in the following cities:
- Hannover
- Bremen
- Braunschweig
- Wolfsburg
- Göttingen
- Goslar
- Osnabrück
The Verdi regional district of Lower Saxony-Bremen announced that around 6,000 employees were called to quit work.
Hamburg
In the wage conflict of the public service, the employees of the Hamburg recycling yards are called to warning strikes on Saturday. Five of the eleven currently open recycling centers are affected by the labor dispute, said a spokesman for city cleaning. “We advise against going to the recycling centers because we can not guarantee regular operation,” he said.
The employees of recycling yards in Bergedorf, Harburg, Niendorf, Sasel and Wandsbek are called
Rhineland-Palatinate:
In Rhineland-Palatinate, the following cities are to be strikes:
- Mainz
- Kaiserslautern
- Pirmasens
- Trier
The union wants buses and trams to stay in the depots from 3 a.m. until the end of the shift.
Hessen:
The following cities in Hessen are to be striked:
In Frankfurt, massive restrictions on the underground and trams are expected next Tuesday. It can be assumed that all nine subway lines and ten tram lines will be affected for 24 hours from around 3 a.m., the urban public transport company traffiq said on Friday. This will «hit many passengers painfully». A warning strike is also expected in Kassel.
According to the local transport company, S-Bahn, regional trains and bus routes will run according to schedule in Frankfurt so that they could be used as an alternative. Passengers were recommended to get the latest information as soon as possible before departure.
However, there is still no reliable information. Information will be provided regularly and as up-to-date as possible on the Internet, on social media channels and with information, especially to the radio stations.
The Kasseler Verkehrs-Gesellschaft (KVG) said that because of an appeal by Verdi on Tuesday, buses and trams are unlikely to run in Kassel or in several suburbs. The Regiotrams – tram connections to the surrounding area – would no longer run in Kassel. Outside the city, traffic should be maintained on three Regiotram lines. Buses of the North Hessian Transport Association (NVV) would be available to passengers as an alternative.
Bayern:
The following cities are to be striked in Bavaria:
- Munich: The warning strikes are expected to lead to closings in some clinics, parts of the city administration, the Munich municipal utilities, as well as the city libraries and city childcare facilities on Monday. When asked by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, Verdi was unable to say exactly how many childcare facilities will be closed on Monday, but they assume a “two-digit, possibly even three-digit number”.
