The VCP trade union also wants it to be possible to adjust the state pension age downwards if life expectancy falls. The Trade Union Federation for Professionals thus responds to Statistics Netherlands figures which showed on Friday that life expectancy in the Netherlands may be falling as a result of the corona pandemic.
In the bill on the retirement age that will soon go to the House of Representatives, life expectancy only works in one direction, the VCP says. If the Dutch get a year older on average, everyone has to work eight months longer. What happens when life expectancy falls is not regulated.
“A fall in the state pension age may then be obvious and should not be ruled out in advance”, says VCP director Ruud Stegers. The VCP, which represents 150,000 workers, calls on the House to also discuss a lower retirement age.
The CBS reported on Friday morning that almost nine thousand people died more than usual last spring. The effect on average life expectancy depends on developments in the rest of the year.
